SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand)

A business model for delivering over-the-top content (OTT).

Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) is a service that allows you to subscribe and gain access to video content. By paying a fixed monthly fee, you can watch unlimited content, usually without any advertisements. Netflix is the most well-known example of this.

SVOD in The Netherlands

In The Netherlands, Netflix is the most popular SVOD service. In 2024, nearly half (42%) of Belgian households had a paid or trial subscription to the service (source: CIM Establishment Survey 2024).

RTL's SVOD service Videoland continues to expand its content library and has entered into partnerships with major content providers like ViacomCBS to offer programs from channels such as MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. Similarly, "Play by KPN" from KPN and NLziet, a joint initiative by Dutch broadcasters offering a mix of on-demand content and live TV, are examples of SVOD services available in the Dutch market.
